A comfortable target is about 10 feet high, 14–15 feet wide, and 16–18 feet deep.
That target is not a universal minimum. Measure ceiling clearance from the finished hitting surface.
Ceiling height is a golfer-specific requirement. A published room minimum can confirm that equipment fits, but it cannot prove that a golfer can swing driver naturally. Height, posture, swing plane, club length, mat thickness, ceiling hardware, and confidence all matter.
Often limited to wedges, shorter clubs, half swings, or shorter golfers. A technical fit is not enough if the golfer changes the swing.
Can work for many iron swings. Driver depends heavily on the golfer, mat height, overhead hardware, and real swing test.
Provides more confidence for driver and taller golfers, but the actual swing still must be tested at the planned hitting position.
Do the slow-swing test correctly
- Stand on material matching the final mat or platform height.
- Use the exact ball position planned for the room.
- Swing wedge, 7-iron, hybrid, fairway wood, and driver slowly.
- Stop if the club approaches a rail, opener, light, shelf, beam, or ceiling.
- Reject the layout if the golfer flattens, shortens, or hesitates through the swing.
Width controls swing comfort, hitting position, and handedness.
Measure usable width at the golfer’s hands, shoulders, and clubhead path—not only at floor level. Shelves, vehicles, door jambs, columns, wall padding, and enclosure side curtains can reduce the real swing zone.
10–12 feet
Can work for one golfer with an offset hitting position. Driver and wide swing planes may feel constrained, and centered projection may not align with the ball.
12–14 feet
Creates more freedom for side protection and screen placement. Mixed handedness still needs testing because the ball may remain offset.
14–15+ feet
Better for centered hitting, left- and right-handed golfers, wider enclosures, overhead tracking, and a more natural driver swing.
Total depth is the sum of several separate zones.
Measure from the rear obstruction to the final location of the impact system. A wall-to-wall garage measurement overstates usable depth when the screen needs a rear buffer, the enclosure projects into the room, or a behind-ball launch monitor needs space behind the golfer.
Usually better for nearby camera tracking, iron practice, a compact net, and no-projector layouts. Behind-ball radar may not fit.

“Radar versus camera” is a useful starting point, but the exact model controls the measurement zone. Use current manufacturer instructions, because setup distances, hitting zones, mounting positions, special balls, and lighting requirements differ.

Plan the net or screen system before fixing the hitting position.
Many home setups place the ball about 8–12 feet from the impact surface, but the correct distance depends on launch-monitor requirements, net or screen dimensions, enclosure depth, high-lofted shots, side misses, visual comfort, and the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
Ball-to-net or screen
Check the launch monitor first. Garmin and Rapsodo both call for at least 8 feet from the ball to the net in their indoor guidance.
Screen-to-wall buffer
Some impact-screen systems recommend roughly 12–16 inches behind the screen. Use the exact instructions for the selected screen and frame.
Side and overhead capture
The width and height must contain real shanks and high wedges—not only center strikes. Add wall, ceiling, and frame protection where needed.
Screen size, aspect ratio, and throw ratio must be calculated together.
The projector cannot be chosen from room depth alone. The final image width, native aspect ratio, throw ratio, zoom range, lens position, golfer location, enclosure, and mount location determine whether the image fills the screen without shadows or club danger.
Measure the viewable screen
Use the image area inside the enclosure—not the full wall or frame width. Decide whether the simulator will use 16:9, 16:10, 4:3, or another image shape.
Calculate the lens position
Use the exact projector’s official calculator. Zoom and aspect-ratio changes can alter the workable mounting range.
Check the golfer and ball path
The mount must avoid the club path, direct ball strikes, enclosure hardware, garage rails, and shadows cast by the golfer.

Climate and ventilation

A thick mat or platform reduces usable swing height and changes launch-monitor alignment.
Using only wall-to-wall depth

Buying the monitor first
